About me
I graduated from Cardiff School of Art and Design in the mid 90’s with a degree in Ceramics. During that time I was a mould maker whose work was influenced by the embodiment of the human image.
This lead me into the world of theatrical costume, wigs and make-up, where I specialised as a hair and make-up artist for the film and television industry. An inspiring and successful career spanning sixteen years.
It was my love for making that bought me back to ceramics in Cardiff, where I now work in my garden studio.
Working practice
The ambition of each item that I make is directed by its form, colour and decorative qualities.
I create stoneware vessels, using a blend of clay making approaches. I muse around the technique of faceting, which is my current passion; an action of slicing through firm clay, peeling back the excess to reveal the newly chiseled surface.
Each pot can have a different combination of either throwing, hand building or carving. Bringing with them their own physical charm. These explore the juxtaposition of an irregular hand carved shape with a decisive cut or the centred qualities of thrown clay
All of my work is glazed with personally formulated recipes which have been chosen for their specific qualities. Focusing on how they sit and move on the geography of the pot. Seeking muted colours and surfaces which are inspired by the natural landscape and coastline. My coherent colour palette has a range of finishes, manoeuvring between matte, gloss and crystalline glazes.
The pleasure of a well crafted object, whatever that craft may be, is what inspires me to make. I enjoy artefacts that are enriched by the time and skills of a maker; design decisions informed by the making process and materials used. I’ve an eclectic taste, that has been influenced by aesthetic memories collected throughout my life and previous career.
